Fovea is a reading app. It is built so that you can use it with no account, and with no account nothing about you is stored on our servers. Browsing the summary catalog does contact our server, which keeps ordinary request logs. This page explains exactly what is stored, where, and when.
Using Fovea without an account
An account is optional. With no account, the app works fully offline and no personal data leaves your device. The books you import, your reading position, your settings and your reading statistics are stored only in the app’s local database on your device, and are removed when you delete the app.
Using Fovea with an account
If you choose to sign in, with Sign in with Apple or an email link, we create an account so your library can follow you across devices. From then on our server stores:
- your account identifier and, for email sign-in, your email address;
- your name, if you chose Sign in with Apple and allowed it to be shared. Apple lets you hide it, and hiding it changes nothing about how the app works;
- library metadata: the title, author and source of each book you added, along with which items you deleted;
- your reading position in each book, together with a random identifier for the device that saved it. That identifier is generated by the app, is not your device’s own identifier, and exists so that two of your devices can tell whose position is the newer one;
- your reading preferences, such as speed, theme and typeface.
The text of your books is never uploaded. Books you import stay on your device. Reading statistics stay on your device too and are never synchronised.
Recommendations
The “For you” shelf on the home screen is put together entirely on your device. It uses the interests you picked, which books you added and finished, and how far into them you got, to order books from our catalogue. Those interests are stored only on your device and are never sent to us. We never receive a ranking, and the shelf works exactly the same with no account at all. Apple’s privacy label calls this Product Personalisation, which is why you will see it listed there.
What we do not do
There is no advertising in Fovea, no tracking across other companies’ apps or websites, and no sale of personal data. We build no profile of you on our servers: the only personalisation is the on-device shelf described just above. We do not use your data to train anything. The app itself contains no third-party analytics: what you read, and how fast, stays on your device. This website is the one exception, and it is described below.
Payments
Subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. From Apple we receive the subscription’s status and its transaction identifiers, which is what lets the app unlock the paid features. We never receive your card or any payment detail.
Service providers
Account and synchronisation data is stored with Supabase, on servers in the European Union. This website is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server request logs (including IP addresses) for security and operational purposes.
This website uses Google Analytics to count visits. It runs on every visit and we do not ask you first. It sets two cookies (_gaand _ga_…) which let us tell a returning visitor from a new one, and Google receives the pages you open, an approximate location from a truncated IP address, and general device information. That data is processed in the United States. We use it only to see whether anyone is using the site; there is no advertising here, and advertising signals are switched off. You can refuse the cookies by blocking them in your browser or by using Google’s opt-out add-on, and the site works exactly the same without them. The app itself uses no analytics at all.
Keeping your data
Account data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account from the app at any time, which removes your account and the data listed above from our servers. Signing out simply stops synchronisation and leaves your local library intact.
Your rights
Fovea is operated from Switzerland and follows the revised Federal Act on Data Protection. You may ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, or a copy in a portable format, and you may object to processing. Write to the address below and we will answer within a month. You can complain to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner. If you are in the European Economic Area the GDPR also applies to you, and you keep the right to complain to your own national supervisory authority.
Children
Fovea is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, tell you in the app.
